Side effects of weight-loss injections

GLP-1–based therapies revolutionised obesity and type 2 diabetes care for many patients. Knowing typical and warning symptoms supports safer use.

Common effects include nausea, reflux, constipation or diarrhoea, especially during dose escalation. Eating slowly, smaller portions, adequate fluids and timing adjustments often help; persistent symptoms need medical review.

Rare but important alerts include severe abdominal pain (possible pancreatitis), allergic reactions, vision changes in diabetics when glucose shifts rapidly, and symptoms of gallbladder disease.

Injectable regimens can reduce appetite substantially—patients may under-eat protein or fluids unless coached. Periodic laboratory checks may be advised depending on comorbidities and concomitant medicines.

Report new symptoms early. Do not stop essential diabetes medicines abruptly without a clinician’s plan.
